SFをたくさん読もうキャンペーンが僕の中で始まってかなりの期間が経つわけですが、
やっと来ました、大御所グレッグイーガン。いきなり長編で挫折というのもなんなので短編集をチョイス。
本日はこの巻頭に収録の「適切な愛」を。
－近未来。愛する夫を大きな事故で半死半生の状態とされてしまった主人公の女性。
脳以外の部分を全てクローン部品と入れ替えることでしか夫を生きながらえさせる術はない。
幸い、医療費は保険で支払われる。
だが、約款によりクローン部品の培養が完了するまでの期間、彼女自身が代理母として、
子宮に夫の脳を宿すことを余儀なくされる…。
…医療行為の一環として夫の脳を体内で保管する。
この古典的とも言えるＳＦガジェットが、物語がクライマックスに向かうにつれて残酷な真実を突きつけてくる。
この体内保管によって彼女の体は否応なしにホルモン分泌が妊娠時のそれへと変わってしまう。
当然、つわりなども発生する。妊娠時の倦怠感やもう一つの生命を維持するために食事量なども増え、彼女は名実共に「お腹を痛める」状態となり、ついには夫の脳に母性を感じてしまうに至るのだ。
…その時、逆説的に感情というものが信じられなくなってしまう彼女。
単なる医療技術に過ぎない行為によって、本能的な慈しみの感情が芽生えてしまうという事実。これは決して障害を乗り越えたことで深まった男女間の愛とは違う。その事を痛感し、彼女は人間らしい感情というモノに不信感を覚えてしまったのだ…。
恋愛、母性本能、慈しみ。これらは尊い感情である事は確かだが、一方で他の感情と同様に
脳内で起こる生理現象の一つでしかないという真実の一局面が、わずか30ページほどで露わにされてしまう。
僕は男性なので子を宿すことは出来ないから、ここに書かれている事が真実かどうかを
身を持って知ることは出来ない。しかし、少なくとも説得力は感じさせられた。
グレッグイーガン、恐るべし。
